Meghalaya Pineapple Fest 2023: A Grand New Delhi Launch Blending Culture, Agricultural Prowess & Unity

Meghalaya's rich agro-climatic conditions yield a diverse range of organic crops, including high-value products like Lakadong Turmeric and the GI-tagged Khasi mandarin. The state's pineapples have been gaining international acclaim due to their exceptional quality, low sourness, and high sugar content (Brix value of 16-18). They have even found their way into European and Middle Eastern markets.

Meghalaya's efforts have propelled it to be among the top five pineapple-producing states in India, with its pineapples gaining recognition for minimal pesticide and heavy metal residue. The state's pineapple sector has flourished, as evident from increased farmgate prices and international exports.

The government's interventions, including supporting farmer collectives, building value addition infrastructure, and forming farmer cooperatives, have revitalized the agriculture sector. Institutional trading has led to higher income for farmers, who now sell by weight, benefiting from increased prices per kilogram.

The state has extended its agricultural focus to other products like turmeric, ginger, mandarin, honey, and black pepper. Collaborations with international organizations and the establishment of processing units and infrastructure have contributed to these successes.
