With Marvel poised to unleash Ironheart on June 24, the wait is finally on in earnest for the series that has been gestating for so long. As low-key as it has been, the just-released trailer came right on time to rekindle the hype all over again. The series heralds a new era for the MCU, centered around up-and-coming tech whiz Riri Williams, played by Dominique Thorne, who debuted in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.

Storyline

The series continues after Wakanda Forever and sees Riri get her footing as a hero. With a genius mind and armor that rivals even that of Iron Man, Riri sets out to determine what sort of hero she is to be. The trailer promises a blend of science and mysticism as her Ironheart armor is infested with supernatural aspects. Along the way, she meets a mysterious stranger (played by Anthony Ramos) who is being drawn into dark forces, which builds a battle of ideologies and power. With real-life allies and online friends by her side, Riri is equipped for whatever is coming.

Positive Points

The highlight of the trailer is Dominique Thorne's assured return as Riri Williams. Her performance promises emotional depth and character buildup. The combination of high-tech and mystic energy gives the series a distinct taste, something other than usual Marvel origin tales. Casting Anthony Ramos as a complexly moral character is interesting, and the rest of the cast—Alden Ehrenreich, Lyric Ross, and Manny Montana—is talented and diverse in making it happen. Visually, the series is well-cut, and the design of the Ironheart armor is stylish and fearsome.

Negative Points

One of the negative factors has been the slow and understated marketing campaign, potentially damaging early word-of-mouth. The trailer, while laden with spoilers, doesn't really hint at the central plot or stakes, which could lead some to question what they're signing up for. A degree of Marvel fatigue may also be the extent to which audiences will embrace the tale of another new hero.

Overall: Ironheart has all the ingredients to be an MVP Marvel series—solid lead, original idea, and promising visuals. If it honors its character-driven narrative and balances technology with humanity, it might be a fitting heir to the Iron mantle.
