Toxic shows up with huge expectations due to its star-studded cast that consists of Yash, Nayanthara, Kiara Advani, Huma Qureshi, and Tara Sutaria. The film is based in pre-Independence Goa during Portuguese rule and revolves around the life of Raya, a gangster shaped by his childhood trauma, revenge, power, and emotions of love and betrayal. Based on the premise alone, the film has enough ingredients to make an engaging gangster tale. Despite having a few good performances and some interesting visuals, it turns out to be disappointing as the story is predictable, direction is weak, and the plot is overdone.

    Toxic Storyline

The story begins when Raya's childhood is stained with tragedy. After Raya's father dies at the hands of his own mother, Raya is taken care of by his sister Ganga. Years later, the siblings decide to take their revenge on gangster Fernandez and work their way into the good books of his powerful brother, Salvador. With the course of time, Raya builds up his reputation as a notorious gangster in Goa. As Raya becomes stronger, the story introduces a number of events, relationships, and conflicts between Rebecca, Salvador's daughter; Elizabeth, Salvador's mistress; Tony, a young ambitious man; and circus performer Nadia.

Thus, a story full of assassination attempts, deceptions, love triangles, revenge, and deaths unfolds. By the time Raya finds himself alone and realizes that it is too late to fight for his life, it becomes clear that the movie has lost almost all of its emotional impact. The plot has some key events of dramatic nature but it does not mean that the presence of many twists necessarily makes the plot interesting.

    Positive Points

The main reason to see Toxic is Yash. His presence on screens is just about the most valuable part of the film. He performs the role of Raya with great passion, style and physical authority. Yash is skilled enough to retain the audience's attention even if the screenplay becomes weak. In many ways, Toxic is about Yash and Yash. The actor seems to be fighting against the constraints of the material. His acting adds depth to the pain, rage and emotional conflicts of Raya, but the writing continuously presents him with the stereotype of the gangster-hero.

    Negative Points

Tara Sutaria's turn is the least convincing part of the film. More than once, she seems unable to deliver her role properly. Her emotional acting is lacking intensity. The character she plays is important for the development of Raya's story, but her portrayals do not achieve the necessary impact.

It becomes especially clear in the film that is built on tragic events and romantic relationships. When the key emotional performance fails to relate to the viewers, the effect of the scene is lost. Specifically, Tara Sutaria's character requires much stronger and believable acting in order for the emotional downfall

    Toxic Direction

Unfortunately, the direction leaves much to be desired. Toxic has a very ambitious premise with a large-scale gangster drama but lacks execution. The film revolves around too many well-known situations and fails to create suspense and emotional depth.

The setting of Goa, prior to independence, could have offered many opportunities, but the movie did not take full advantage of it and it suffers from generic plotting. Instead of shaping the historical background into a unique story about a powerful gangster, the movie relies on familiar topics.

Conclusion: Toxic is disappointing due to its weak plot. While the film features a strong performance from Yash, it is not enough to overcome the flaws of writing, directing and plot development. Toxic is a letdown of a film, with impressive acting from Yash but a weak and confusing script. Formulaic plot, ineffective storyline, and mediocre direction prevent this movie from being the riveting gangster tale which it ought to have been. Even though Yash puts in his best efforts and gives his great performance, it is not enough to salvage a script that is banal and lacks emotions.
