Lokesh Kanagaraj comes back with Coolie, a dark mass entertainer featuring Rajinikanth in the lead, supported by Nagarjuna, Shruti Haasan, Soubin Shahir, and Sathyaraj. With Anirudh Ravichander composing the music and produced by Sun Pictures, the film released amidst gigantic expectations. Blend of high-octane action and multi-layered characters, Coolie is set to bring in style and substance.

Storyline

Rajinikanth resides in a big house, peacefully running it by staying in one of its rooms. When his dear friend Rajasekhar (Sathyaraj) meets a suspicious death, Deva feels something fishy has happened. Rajasekhar's oldest daughter Preethi (Shruti Haasan) dislikes Deva's presence, but he is bent on finding out what happened.

While all this is going on, Simon (Nagarjuna) has a huge export business, abetted by his merciless second in command Dayal (Soubin Shahir), who runs the show with an iron hand. When plainclothes police officers infiltrate their organization, Dayal eliminates them without compunction. A shared past between Rajasekhar, Simon, and Dayal pulls Deva into a web of retribution and disclosure. As Deva investigates, buried truths regarding his past emerge, paving the way for high-voltage clashes.

Positive Points

Coolie's greatest asset is its cast. Rajinikanth's charm and energy continue to be magnetic, and Nagarjuna gives a serene yet dangerous villain performance. Soubin Shahir stands out as the best of the cast, playing Dayal as a snappy, erratic villain who generates much of the film's tension.

Lokesh Kanagaraj's script is taut, with tastefully executed turns of events and a new character introduction free from old love tracks or duets. The dynamics between hero, villain, and the wild card antagonist work well in making for interesting drama. Anirudh Ravichander's rousing background score enhances the mood, and Girish Gangadharan's cinematography and Philomin Raj's editing make the story visually and rhythmically appealing.

Negative Points

Though mostly absorbing, some of the scenes in the latter half are dragged out, marginally dampening the pace. Shruti Haasan's character is underexploited, and some of the supporting actors could have been fleshed out more. A solid mass moment for Rajinikanth in the pre-climax might be missed by some fans.

Overall: Coolie combines Rajinikanth's signature style with Lokesh Kanagaraj's realistic storytelling, supported by powerful villain performances from Nagarjuna and Soubin Shahir. With its taut twists, energetic score, and brutal character dynamics, it is a well-crafted mass entertainer that action enthusiasts and Rajini fans will enjoy.
