Storyline

The tale is about Qingyi Murong, the last son of a very powerful general. Captured in early childhood, he becomes a victim of cruelty and abuse and remains so until his escape. At the worst moments of his life, he was saved by Susu Ren, whose goodness turned his life upside down. Soon after, a tragedy comes, and Susu’s family becomes ruined, and the lovers will not be able to establish a life together.

Many years later, life has brought them together, with them eventually falling in love. However, Susu makes the painful choice of faking her own death because of her concern for other people, which leaves Qingyi to deal with his anguish. After three years, Susu unexpectedly returns into Qingyi’s life as his future sister-in-law, a complication that creates tension in the love story. Susu and Qingyi have to rekindle their broken relationship while dealing with the feelings of resentment and pain, love, and guilt.

Positive Points

The aspect of storytelling related to emotions is a strength of this play. The relationship between two main characters is intricate and comprises elements of sacrifice and redemption, thus, making the story captivating. Shanghai's historical background has been created with the help of beautiful settings and costumes. It has been said that cinematography is very important in allowing viewers to feel the emotions in the film. The plot tells a story about love, family relations, forgiveness, and patriotism.

Negative Points

There are moments in this drama when it depends on excessive cliché elements, such as drawn-out misunderstandings and repeated sacrifices, which can become bland. Certain minor roles are without development, and several scenes can be cut down to improve pacing.

Overall: The drama does a good job of balancing feelings with historical events, of using nice acting and great visuals and having a lovely love story.  If you are fond of Chinese dramas about history, battles, and love, then this one is exactly what you need.
