Adhura Review: A Dramatic Letdown Lacking The Intended Spookiness Factor

Cast: Ishwak Singh, Rasika Dugal, Shrenik Arora, Poojan Chhabra, Arjun Deswal

Adhura is a gripping web series set in the beautiful backdrop of the Nilgiri Valley School in Ooty. The story revolves around a school reunion for the batch of 2007, but takes an unexpected turn when Adhiraj JaiSingh, played by Ishwak Singh, encounters Vedant Malik, a 10-year-old student. As Adhiraj seeks closure for past events with his school bestie Ninad, he forms a mysterious bond with Vedant and unravels a dark secret from the past. With the support of school counselor Supriya Ghosh, portrayed by Rasika Dugal, the truth gradually emerges, leading to a thrilling climax.

One of the best aspects of Adhura is its engaging flashback sequences, which serve as a whodunit thriller. The parallel investigation adds depth to the narrative, and the twists and turns keep the audience intrigued. The series successfully builds an atmosphere of suspense and mystery. The performances by the cast, particularly Ishwak Singh and Shrenik Arora as Adhiraj and Vedant, are commendable and enhance the emotional connection with the characters.

However, Adhura does have some shortcomings. The execution of the horror elements falls short, as the characters do not fully convey the sense of fear, and the visuals lack impact. The balance between the messaging and the scares is inconsistent, often distracting from the overall experience. Additionally, the plot follows a familiar blueprint of culprits gathering under one roof and vengeful ghosts seeking revenge, which may feel overused to some viewers.

Despite these flaws, Adhura manages to hold the viewer's attention with its intriguing storyline and strong performances. The exploration of past secrets and the journey toward uncovering the truth create a compelling narrative. Overall, the series offers an entertaining watch, especially for fans of mysteries and thrillers, although it could have benefited from a more effective execution of its horror elements.
