Positive Points

The trailer advantages feature a focus on horror instead of as much action or explosions and seem to be focusing more on suspense and dread than reliance on a lot of action. The visual style of Zach Cregger’s direction looks to be encouragingly moody and lends a feeling of continuous danger as well.

The trailer also has another positive aspect by introducing many new characters and telling an original story. The new creative options provide for further expansion beyond the previous cliché stories established in the Resident Evil franchise allowing for both long-term and new fans to experience the franchise in a rather similar way to what was originally intended from its inception as a horror survival video game series.

Raccoon City also brings nostalgia while providing a different perspective on the darker tone of the series with a more grounded form of tension compared to the previous Resident Evil films. Further, the backing of Constantin Film, Vertigo Entertainment and PlayStation Productions will provide a good deal of confidence.

Negative Points

The most likely disappointment for fans will be that iconic characters aren’t in the trailer or film and many familiar characters may not appear in future Resident Evil films. Some longtime fans may feel it is too far of a risk to stray away from established characters. There is no mention of the new lead character in terms of carrying the emotional load of the film... there are many other new characters that were introduced in this film as well.

Overall: This new version of Resident Evil has introduced a new direction for the series, featuring horror/survival elements mixed with all new stories. In some cases, this may cause to have mixed feelings about the return of missing characters, but it does generate interest and suspense via the trailer. If executed properly, this should be the best Resident Evil film to date!
