Fortis Gurugram Removes 10.3 kg Cancerous Stomach Tumor, Reconstructs Stomach For 58-Year-Old Yemeni Patient
In a first-of-its-kind medical miracle, Fortis Memorial Research Institute, Gurugram, successfully removed a 10.3 kg and 35 x 26 cm gastrointestinal stromal tumor (GIST) from a 58-year-old man's abdomen. Md Abdullah Hussain had been experiencing severe abdominal pain, black stools, weakness, and anemia for three months. Although he had visited various hospitals for the treatment, no alternative was attempted due to the risks involved. As a last resort, he reached Fortis Memorial Research Institute, Gurugram.
A CT scan diagnosed a gigantic vascular tumor occupying the abdominal cavity. A team of physicians, led by Dr. Amit Javed, Senior Director, Gastrointestinal Oncology, Minimal Access, and Bariatric Surgery, performed a very complex gastrectomy to remove the tumor. Since the tumor had engulfed and adhered to the entire stomach, the panel was forced to entirely take out the organ. The intricate surgery lasted 6-7 hours, and to everyone's surprise, the patient was discharged in stable condition nine days later.
