BJP MP Dilip Ghosh found himself embroiled in controversy as an FIR was lodged against him in Durgapur, West Bengal, following derogatory remarks directed at Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. The incident unfolded with Ghosh issuing an apology for his comments, shortly before receiving a show-cause notice from the Election Commission, demanding a response by March 29.

In a viral social media video, Ghosh was seen making disparaging remarks about Banerjee's family background. The Election Commission, in its notice, provided an English translation of Ghosh's statement, where he appeared to question Banerjee's allegiance by stating, "When Didi goes to Goa, she becomes Goa's daughter, in Tripura, she says I am Tripura's daughter, decide who is your father, this is not right."

Ghosh's remarks were in response to the Trinamool Congress's slogan during the 2021 Bengal Assembly polls, 'Bangla Nijer Meyekei Chaye' which means 'Bengal wants its own daughter'.

After this remark from dilip ghosh, Trinamool Congress filed a complaint against Ghosh with the Election Commission, leading to the commission deeming the comments offensive, insulting, and prima facie a violation of the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) and its previous advisory. The commission reminded Ghosh of the MCC provision, which mandates criticism of political parties to be confined to policies, programs, and past records.

Amidst the controversy, the BJP also sought clarification from Ghosh regarding his remarks.

After receiving backlash, Ghosh reflected on his mistake and recognised his bad choice of words to express himself. He clarified that his comments were not motivated by personal animosity towards the chief minister but were rather a response to what he perceived as Banerjee's attempts to "confuse" the public with her political rhetoric.

He defended his statements as a direct reaction to Banerjee's actions, asserting his stance of openly addressing any perceived wrongdoing. Ghosh, a former state BJP president, is known for his outspoken nature, often stirring controversy with his remarks.
