Delhi Metro Shifts From Smart Cards To National Common Mobility Cards For Seamless Nationwide Travel
Delhi Metro

Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) is set to revolutionize the commuting experience for metro and bus travelers across India with the phased introduction of Open Loop National Common Mobility Cards (NCMC). In a response to queries in the Rajya Sabha, Minister of State in the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, Kausal Kishore, revealed that the NCMC would replace the existing Closed Loop Delhi Metro Smart Cards. The transition is part of an effort to create a seamless and unified travel experience by enabling the use of a single card nationwide.

The NCMC is designed to be customer-friendly, offering convenience and facilitating cashless transactions. It operates as a prepaid, secure, and standard card, adhering to the dual interface EMV+ standard. The card is issued by banks and is linked to the Paytm Payments Bank wallet, making it versatile for various financial transactions beyond transportation.

One of the key advantages of the NCMC open loop card is its acceptance at all retail Point of Sale (POS) devices. This distinguishes it from closed-loop cards, which are limited to specific operating environments. The DMRC initiated the process of converting all fare gates to accept NCMC cards in October 2021, ensuring a smooth transition for commuters.

The introduction of NCMC aligns to promote a cashless transaction environment. Users can conveniently recharge their NCMC online or at designated recharge points, streamlining the management of their cards. Minister Kausal Kishore assured that the DMRC reported no delays or challenges in implementing NCMC, citing adherence to Reserve Bank of India (RBI) guidelines.

In summary, the phased introduction of Open Loop National Common Mobility Cards by DMRC marks a significant advancement in enhancing the efficiency and user experience of public transportation across India. The transition from Closed Loop Delhi Metro Smart Cards to NCMC reflects a commitment to embracing modern, interoperable, and customer-centric solutions for a seamless and cashless travel experience.
