Former Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, held in detention since August, is set to be released from the hospital on Sunday, as per Thailand's Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin.

Thaksin's parole was granted earlier this week. A significant figure in politics and a billionaire, Thaksin returned to Thailand after 15 years of self-imposed exile to evade imprisonment for a conflict of interest charge. Upon his return, the King reduced his eight-year sentence to one year. For the past six months, he has been hospitalized due to an undisclosed health condition.

Prime Minister Srettha, addressing reporters, confirmed Thaksin's release on the 18th, underscoring adherence to legal procedures. However, Thaksin might face legal hurdles as prosecutors weigh charges linked to alleged derogatory remarks about the monarchy made during a 2015 media interview, according to Reuters.

Thaksin's return coincided with Srettha's assumption of the prime ministerial role, prompting speculation about a possible agreement between Thaksin and his opponents within Thailand's royalist-military circles. Nonetheless, Thaksin's allies, including the Pheu Thai Party supported by the Shinawatra family, have dismissed such speculations.

This development raises questions about the political landscape in Thailand, given Thaksin's enduring influence despite his legal battles. His release could potentially shift dynamics within the country's political arena, as supporters and opponents alike anticipate the ramifications of his return to public life.

The situation surrounding Thaksin's parole and potential legal proceedings underscores the complexities of Thailand's political landscape, where power struggles and legal disputes intertwine. As Thaksin prepares to leave hospital confinement, the nation awaits the repercussions of his reemergence on the political stage.
