Alpha is a new addition to the YRF Spy Universe, directed by Shiv Rawail. This film stars a wide range of prominent actors such as Alia Bhatt, Sharvari, Bobby Deol and Anil Kapoor. Alpha focuses on an all-female cast of spies, and although it delivers an action-packed, visually impressive approach to the traditional concept of a spy film, the story is not very original since YRF uses their traditional recipe for creating this type of film. The movie’s action scenes are stunning and the cast do an excellent job, but ultimately, the film falls short of exceeding expectations of originality.

Storyline

The story revolves around Sita (Alia Bhatt), a woman soldier who has undergone extensive training in the classified Alpha Program (a clandestine division of the Indian Army). Under the leadership of Fateh Singh Lakhawat (Bobby Deol) and Colonel Vikrant Kaul (Anil Kapoor), this program has created a new breed of soldier that will change modern combat forever. The plot revolves around a revolutionary. Additionally, Sharvari plays an influencer whose life contrasts greatly with that of Sita. These two characters come together after a series of misunderstandings, and band together in order to thwart a much larger scheme that could jeopardise the safety of their country. Along the way, they complete numerous dangerous tasks in stunning locations filled with explosive gunfire. Ultimately, they will save their country by defeating those who would harm it, but they will have to do so on a strict timeline to accomplish this.

Positive Points

The main highlight of this movie would be its superb quality of action and choreography. From physical fighting and hand-to-hand combat to extremely large-scale chase scenes, this movie definitely has enough heart-pounding action scenes to keep any viewer pumped up. Alia Bhatt does an exceptional job portraying her character as an action hero full of fearlessness, along with having the physical ability to execute many of her demanding stunts. Sharvari also plays well off of her, especially when it comes to the more action-related portions during the second half of the film. Bobby Deol is the star of this film, displaying his dominance through an overwhelming on-screen presence above all others.

Negative Points

Even with the exciting premise behind the story, the script could definitely fall under the category of being very predictable and not significantly developed. Unfortunately, because of this lack of depth to the story, the audience will find themselves seeing a lot of repeat scenes during the second half of the movie after being initially blown away by the action of the first half.

The character of Sharvari was simply introduced to the story just to introduce another action star; therefore, her character provides very little value to the storyline, similarly to several other supporting characters that suffered the same fate. The second half of the movie begins to decline in energy and excitement because of how much of the storytelling and action is borrowed from similar Hollywood superhero and spy franchises without a great deal of originality being added to it.

Overall: Alpha has done a great job of being an action packed visual delight. However, the main storyline is not as strong as many of us would have liked it to be and therefore only partially reached what many of us have come to expect from a top class spy thriller. For those who are into the YRF Spy Universe, they should enjoy the fashion of the movie, the strength of the acting performances, and the overall production quality, while anyone who is seeking a compelling and cohesive story will likely find this movie to be somewhat disappointing.
