Rajkummar Rao returns to the big screen in a killing, never-before-seen avatar in the teaser of Maalik, and it's already causing ripples across the entire internet. Pulkit has directed the teaser, which promises to give us a glimpse of a dark, gritty underworld drama against the backdrop of the late 1980s. With power, blood, and revenge at its core, Maalik takes us on a brutal ride where one man's word is law and Rajkummar Rao occupies that throne with ease.

The teaser starts in 1988 Allahabad, where crime and anarchy seem to hold sway over the streets.
Maalik, played by Rajkummar Rao, is at the center of it all, and his piercing stares and ominous strides give one a sense of respect and fear. The sepias and gritty tones of the frames and the charged air create a sense of electricity. There is a suggestion of backroom politics, blood, and a looming power struggle, and it sets the tone for a plot that is driven by ambition and blood. The background music and the voiceover add to the charged mood of the teaser.

Positive Points: The teaser's greatest strength is clearly Rajkummar Rao. Trained to completely dive into every role that he does, here he appears to be dipping into his very depths. From the introspective movements of his eyes to the unbridled physicality he brings to the role, it is evident that Rao is going to present us with one of his most chameleon-like performances till date.
The period setting also works, with production design and costumes that manage to recreate 1980s small-town India quite effectively. Pulkit's direction also appears to be snappy, with cuts that don't reveal too much but beckon the viewer in.

Negative Points: Yes, the teaser is full of mood and imagery, but it is certainly not descriptive of supporting cast or plot.
None of the supporting characters is introduced except Rao's Maalik, and that could leave some anticipating more plot balance. And the heavy reliance on visual effect at the cost of plot complexity could be a style-over-substance situation if not properly balanced in the film.

Overall: Maalik's teaser is a tight, suspenseful lead-up to what seems to be a dark crime thriller. Thanks to the spine-chilling makeover by Rajkummar Rao, the film has huge potential—if it remains true to the story of the bloodshed.
