Netflix’s Operation Safed Sagar is a six-part Hindi war drama inspired by true events during the 1999 Kargil War. The series directed by Oni Sen honors the Golden Arrows Squadron of the Indian Air Force and showcases their important role in one of India’s toughest military operations. The series is not only limited to war action; it addresses the spirit of courage, sacrifice, and strategy that India used to win in the war. The series veers into the very patriotic territory now and then, but it does manage to deliver an interesting emotional experience to its audience.

Storyline

The plot revolves around the Golden Arrows Squadron and the war that arises when hostilities between Pakistan and India erupt into the Kargil War. The squad is made up of young pilots eager to prove themselves but still novices in combat. Tony Dhanoa is the leader of the squadron, played by Jimmy Shergill, and bring in Ajay Ahuja, played by Siddharth, a seasoned pilot, who acts as an instructor to the young pilots. Dhali stands out among the new pilots with his confidence and fearlessness. On the other hand, Baldy suffers from a lack of self-confidence. They must learn how to work together with their fellow pilots before the situation becomes worse. The series also shows some of the political background of the war. It reveals the efforts of then Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee to establish peace with Pakistan. However, developments in the military that take place push both nations closer to war. Following the outbreak of the conflict, significant operational difficulties arise for the Indian Air Force due to old equipment, rough terrain, and strict military limits.

Positive Points

One of Operation Safed Sagar’s strongest points is its respectful representation of the Indian Air Force. Rather than portraying its protagonists as larger-than-life warriors, the show depicts them as very competent professionals who have to cope with fear, expectations, and duties. The viewers see everything that happens during the preparation and execution of the missions, so the fighters’ accomplishments are perceived as justified and hard-won.

The aerial action scenes are undoubtedly the best part of the show. The aerial shots of the flights are done with high professionalism, allowing viewers to feel the tension without the excessive disparity of events. The beautiful mountain scenes, fighter jets, and cortex scenes really capture how harsh the Kargil battlefield was.

Moreover, the performances are one of the highlights of the show. The role of Tony Dhanoa, played by Jimmy Shergill, is portrayed in a calm and authoritative way. Siddharth makes the role of Ajay Ahuja deep and mature. Abhay Verma shows us a young pilot whose self-assurance gradually turns into responsibility, played very well as Dickie.

Negative Points

The major achievement of the show is depicting the value of teamwork instead of individual heroism. Whether it is a pilot or officer or strategist, everyone plays their role in the overall mission of the armed forces. The main flaw is in its pacing and flow. There are too many subplots connected with the wives or girlfriends of pilots that slow down the action. Luckily, this humanizes the heroes of the movie but at the same time, the romance plot featuring Baldy and Madhavi does not significantly contribute to the main plotline.

Another issue is that the political episodes presented in Pakistan and Washington are too melodramatic. There are parts that look more like fiction than truth and do not seem believable enough as a military story. Sometimes the political episodes border on fictional movies instead of presenting true facts and events.

The characters’ development is also poor. Dhali’s characters has a good arc but there are too many supporting pilots whose potential is left unread. Some talented actors are simply wasted. 

The series provides an overly patriotic story that feels okay under the circumstances. However, some dialogues sound a bit cliché to the viewers who are not new to Indian war/kung fu movies.

Overall: Operation Safed Sagar is a brilliant example of how the Indian Air Force fought courageously during the Kargil War. The end product is an excellent mix of exciting action, outstanding performances, and heartfelt storytelling. While a few subplots move slowly and not everything in the political sphere is believable, the overall plot is captivating.
Fans of films like Shershaah, Gunjan Saxena, and URI: The Surgical Strike will experience the sense of glory, cooperation, and bravery which is present in this series.
