Disney is releasing the live-action version of Moana which it has chosen to direct under Thomas Kail. The movie introduces a new face in the person of Catherine Lagaʻaia, as the brave navigator as well as Dwayne Johnson who returns as the powerful demigod, Maui. This new version tells the same arc of the animated version, and has some freshness to the story with the addition of its emotional depth and emphasis on Polynesian culture.
Storyline
Moana, the daughter of the chief of the island of Motunui, is selected by the ocean to restore the heart of Te Fiti and save her island from the evil forces around. Hence, Moana embarks on a journey to reach her goal accompanied by Maui, the demigod who hasn’t been willing to help her at all. On their way, both Moana and Maui meet various magical beings, pass through a variety of challenges, and receive valuable lessons that any hero should know.
Positive Points
One of the strongest aspects of the film is acting performances of Catherine Lagaʻaia, who has perfectly portrayed Moana. Unlike other actors who have just reproduced the animated character, Lagaʻaia has depicted Moana with a truly warm character that could be appreciated by anyone. Dwayne Johnson also returns as Maui, and the humor of the character has remained the same this time.
Visually, Moana is a marvel to watch. The stunning visual imagery of the ocean, the lush forests, and creatures of myth comes alive on screen in the live-action format, making every journey epic and thrilling. At the same time, the film adds a wonderful dimension of depth to its exploration of the Polynesian heritage and history, thereby adding a wonderful flavor to the already exciting narrative.
Negative Points
The movie doesn't reveal anything new to those audience members who have watched the animated version, as it adheres to the script of the animated film. Moreover, although some parts seem to be otiose, the remake sometimes encounters difficulty breaking free from the 2016 classic's shadow. What is more, a number of emotional scenes do not have the same degree of impact as the animated ones.
Conclusion: Moana shows that an effective live-action adaptation does not have to reimagine the original content. Viewers are entertained by its wonderful cast, amazing visuals, story and respect to Polynesian culture.
