Dr. Rashmi Sarkar the President of the Pigmentary Disorders Society and the Organising Chair of IPCC 2026, pointed to the common misconception surrounding pigmentary disorders, which have caused many patients to delay seeking treatment and have negatively impacted their ability to achieve the best possible patient outcome. Dr. Sarkar stated that patients deserve "dignity", "awareness", and "evidence-based care".

According to Dr. Latika Arya, who is a Consultant Dermatologist in New Delhi, it is always safer to seek medical advice from an appropriately certified dermatologist rather than attempting to self-treat or following less than adequately trained individuals’ beauty increase advice. The survey was based upon 14 major cities in India and interviewed 10,198 individuals aged between 25-65. It produced some alarming results. Of those surveyed; over 80% of respondents prefer to self-medicate when they have problems with digestion, such as acid reflux, indigestion or constipation. Additionally; over 65% said they did not have regular bowel movements; over 50% indicated that they eat outside or consume packaged meals on a regular basis and close to 55% do not get regular exercise. Furthermore; 39.9% of respondents used tobacco which is known to be a significant cause of gastrointestinal disorders.

Equally concerning is that of the individuals surveyed, over 80% did not know that blood in the stool is a potential early indicator of a colorectal cancer, and approximately 40% of younger individuals indicated that they ignored their digestive symptoms by attributing them to poor lifestyle choices.

In Delhi where 679 people were surveyed, the level of awareness and the way in which people sought medical advice was particularly concerning. Over 80% of respondents did not recognise blood in the stool as a symptom of concern; and nearly 90% of individuals chose to use home remedies or over-the-counter medications, as opposed to consulting with their doctor for ongoing bowel problems. Only 10.5% of respondents reported that they would seek medical assistance.
Digestive problems were prevalent: more than 65% of individuals reported having irregular bowel habits and more than 80% felt they had not completely emptied their bowels. Behavior risk factors included the frequent consumption of outside food (86%) and very few (35.5%) exercising regularly. There was also a significant proportion (39.2%) who used tobacco products.

Barriers to using health care services included time constraints (35.4%), fear of being embarrassed (31.1%), and not enough information (17.9%). Approximately 80% did not know that some serious digestive diseases can also be present without any pain, thereby increasing the risk of being diagnosed at a later date.

Many experts have stated that the majority of colorectal tumors develop from pre-cancerous growths (polyps). Colorectal cancer is a type of cancer that can be treated if detected early on, primarily through screening. Many symptoms are associated with changes in bowel habits, including blood in the stool, abdominal pain, fatigue, and weight loss without cause.

To celebrate this accomplishment, SSII conducted the first-ever Marathon Robotic Telesurgery in India with over 20 robotic surgeries in one day. The marathon secured the clinical validation of SSII Mantra platform in a real-world scenario and demonstrated that it is precise, safe and scalable to multiple surgical specialties. By 2025, the UNICEF projects that school-aged children and adolescents living with obesity will exceed those living with underweight conditions by a landslide of a global change. The change holds grave risks not just to health but also to the social and economic development of entire countries and communities.

The UN agency's Child Nutrition Report identifies unhealthy food environments as one of the main causes of this crisis. Dr. Rajeev Jayadevan, Chairman of the Scientific Committee of the Indian Medical Association in Cochin, makes clear: "When we hear about malnutrition, we think of skinny children. But now, malnutrition can lead to obesity as well. Low-income families tend to purchase inexpensive foods containing a lot of sugar and fat, but little nutrients."

Sweetened beverages, heavily promoted and sponsored by celebrities, are a case in point. Although cheap, these are major contributors to obesity and diabetes. Well-educated and health-conscious people tend to select protein-high, fiber-rich diets with lots of fruits, vegetables, and water, reflecting the extreme disparity in knowledge and price.

Experts also warn that malnutrition does not end with one generation. Malnourished mothers tend to have children who are preprogrammed to become obese, especially when they subsequently have access to plentiful, high-calorie diets.

This was seen in a study released in Cell Metabolism by Indian scientists. It looked at 50 generations of undernourished mice and found elevated levels of insulin and reduced vitamin B12 and folate. Even when later generations received nutritious food, the metabolic changes continued—proof of long-term epigenetic impact.

Dr. Sanjeev Galande, Dean at Shiv Nadar University and an author of the study, called this the "double burden of malnutrition." 

The Reason Of Paneer Become Hard After Frying?

The culprit is mostly the store-bought paneer, which is typically made from cow's milk and pressed very hard. This variety of paneer is very denser and less porous than the buffalo-milk paneer. When fried, the moisture is released as steam and creating tiny holes which can make the paneer rubbery when cooled. But you can turn that around with the right prepration and technique.

Pre-Frying Soak: The Moisture Boost

If you're using paneer very straight from the fridge then don't fry it immediately. Cold paneer is more likely to harden. Instead: Let it sit at room temperature for half an hour to 1 hour then Cut it into even small cubes. Soak in warm salted water for 10 minutes. This rehydrates and softens the paneer before it even hits the pan.

The Right Frying Method: Gentle & Golden

Frying paneer is not all about to dumping it into the hot oil. A few small changes can either make a big difference. Use medium to medium-high heat — not too hot. Instead of deep frying use shallow frying to get a crisp exterior without drying the inside. Turn the cubes gently and only when necessary to avoid breaking or overcooking them. This method gives you that golden crust while keeping the inside soft.

Post-Fry Soak: The Game-Changer

Immediately after frying the paneer then soak the hot paneer in warm, lightly salted water. Leave it for about 10 minutes. This trick rehydrates the paneer and fills the steam-created voids, restoring the softness of paneer. Don't soak for more than even 15 minutes, or the cubes will become soggy. Gently press each piece to drain excess water before adding to your dish.

Frying enhances the flavor of paneer, but it doesn’t have to ruin its texture. Combine these pre- and post-cooking hacks, and you’ll enjoy soft, succulent paneer every time — no more rubbery disappointments.

India continues to be one of the most affected countries for AMR because of irrational antibiotic use, unrestricted over-the-counter sales, and non-evidence-based prescribing practices, particularly in the ICUs and emergency departments. In spite of the technologies available, cheap and prompt diagnosis is unavailable, leading to over-prescription and misuse of antibiotics. The roundtable hoped to cover diagnostic stewardship as one of the solutions.

The conference was formally opened with a keynote address given by Dr Naveen Nishchal, Founder Chairman, VOH, referring to the AMR global awareness and need for collaboration for all parties at this pivotal moment. Dr. Rajeev Gautam, Sr. Corporate Officer, HORIBA Ltd. Japan & President, HORIBA India, provided thoughts on HORIBA's CSR initiative towards preventive healthcare awareness.

While we do have diagnostic instruments, our focus today is building a movement of sensitivity and shared responsibility around the effective use of antibiotics.” remarked Dr. Gautam, affirming HORIBA’s dedication to public health advocacy.This program was a CSR initiative by HORIBA India to promote awareness for preventive healthcare, contributing to the overall well-being of the society.

Supported by Dr. Ravi Gaur, Chairperson, Medical Advisory Committee, Oncquest Laboratories, the panel discussion brought to the fore the manner in which AMR slowly builds up into uncontrollable infections and how point-of-care (PoC) testing can help in avoiding its spread. Dr. Lata Kapoor, Additional Director, NCDC, MoHFW, made the observation about AMR as a "silent pandemic" and highlighted the importance of PoC diagnostics being part of India's national AMR strategy.

The roundtable passed through two sessions — specifying present diagnostic gaps and breaking out into scalable, strategic recommendations. The recommendations were the utilisation of hospital antibiograms, upscaled AMR surveillance, promotion of syndromic PoC diagnostics, and building clinician stewardship education. Experts also said to take such initiatives out to non-metro regions into tier-2 and tier-3 cities, and rural counties.

Closing addresses by Dr. Kapoor and Dr. Gaur highlighted the importance of decision-making based on diagnostics, policy convergence, and national awareness. This was followed by a networking dinner to further enhance cooperation.

This roundtable is an important milestone towards establishing diagnostic channels, prudent use of antibiotics, and strengthening India's fight against AMR through collective stakeholder action.

A CT scan diagnosed a gigantic vascular tumor occupying the abdominal cavity. A team of physicians, led by Dr. Amit Javed, Senior Director, Gastrointestinal Oncology, Minimal Access, and Bariatric Surgery, performed a very complex gastrectomy to remove the tumor. Since the tumor had engulfed and adhered to the entire stomach, the panel was forced to entirely take out the organ. The intricate surgery lasted 6-7 hours, and to everyone's surprise, the patient was discharged in stable condition nine days later.

Dr. Amit Javed explained, "This operation was quite challenging due to the size of the tumor and its impact on nearby organs. The tumor compressed big vessels and pushed the small bowel, pancreas, spleen, stomach, and duodenum. GISTs are benign or malignant, and the most common complication is lethal bleeding." Fortunately, we removed it in time. Since the stomach serves as a reservoir for the food, we reconstructed it using a pouch of the small intestine, which we then connected with the esophagus. Now the patient is recovering well.

Mr. Deepak Chopra opened the conclave with a focus on collective action with the theme of "Care, Cure, and Control" and the creation of a National Blood Bank & Clot Centre in Delhi. Ms. Shobha Tuli highlighted CSR efforts towards Thalassemia care and appreciated Coal India's efforts.

Dr. Androulla Eleftheriou reiterated global solidarity to care and prevention, calling for gene-based therapies and commitment to UN Sustainable Development Goals. Her Highness Sheikha Sheikha Bint Saif acknowledged efforts together in the fight against Thalassemia, and Dr. Vinod K Paul (NITI Aayog) appreciated the developments of India in screenings and an imperative call for a national program for prevention.

The key panel discussions were regional connectivity, gene therapy, new therapies, and access to critical care. Dr. Sunil Bhat, Dr. Antonio Piga, and Dr. Mohan Kumar K Murugesan spoke regarding new therapies and policy solutions. The conclave also shed light on regulatory issues, patient voices, and the economic burden of Thalassemia.

The conference was finished with an unmet needs session, where issues of blood safety, screening tactics, and state initiatives such as Ayushman Bharat were brought up. The valedictory speeches by the eminent dignitaries laid pragmatic ideas for improving the treatment of Thalassemia.

The Thalassemia Conclave 2025 marked a milestone achievement in policy creation, innovation creation, and improvement of global partnership to build Thalassemia-free horizons.

In centenarian and older patients, hip fractures can lead to lifelong immobilization, severe pain, and infections and blood loss as complications. But with today's medicine, treatment has dramatically improved. Studies show that by 2026 India will have up to 600,000 osteoporotic hip fractures annually with high mortality.

Dr. Sharma, a shoulder, knee, and hip surgeon and founder of the Life in Motion Clinic, noted the subtlety of working with older patients:
"A hip fracture in an older patient can be fatal. Surgery, with formal rehab, is key to regaining mobility and achieving a better quality of life."

Mr. Kapur suffered a bad hip fracture from a household fall. Based on his age and conditions, his only viable option was emergent hip replacement. The surgery was performed in official asepsis and took one to two hours. Astonishingly, he was home in three days and had an aggressive course of rehabilitation, with significant movement and ease of recovery.

"Elderly adults have multiple conditions such as decreased mobility, balance, and chronic conditions like cardiovascular disease and diabetes," Dr. Sharma said. "Our aim is not only to repair the injury but to make the patient a better, healthier individual.".

This path-breaking surgery is a source of encouragement for the elderly, and the fact that it's a testament to the requirement for early orthopaedic care and rehabilitation centers in India cannot be overlooked. With the senior population increasing day by day, such sophisticated medical intervention will prove to be instrumental in the independence and well-being of aged citizens.

Dr. Vikas Dua, Principal Director and Head of Pediatric Hematology, Hemato-Oncology, and Bone Marrow Transplant at FMRI, in his speech on the event, emphasized the role of early diagnosis to improve outcomes. He further said, "India has close to 50,000 new cancer cases in children annually. Early detection, correct diagnosis, and timely treatment are the key to better survival rates. A persistent fever, pallor of skin, lethargy, unexplained bleeding or easy bruising should prompt immediate medical referral. Family physicians play an important role in noticing these early warning signs."

Dr. Neelam Mohan, National President-Elect of IAP, stated, "Cancer is the second leading cause of death in children above the age of one. Detection at an early stage will go a long way in reducing mortality to a large degree as over 80% of cancer in children can be cured if the treatment is taken in time. Awareness, alertness, and action on time can save lives."

Dr. Mahaveer Jain, President, IMA Haryana, and Dr. Ajay Arora, President, IMA Gurugram, emphasized community involvement. "Childhood is meant to be a period of happiness, not fighting diseases. By creating awareness and providing the correct information to medical professionals, we can enhance survival rates and avoid diagnostic delays," they said.

The seminar reinforced that leukemia, brain tumor, lymphoma, and solid tumors like neuroblastoma and Wilms tumor are the majority of cancers found in children. Genetic predisposition and radiation exposure are risk factors.

Dr. Raghav Sehgal of Yale University's Ph.D. and Dr. Michael Lim from Singapore, longevity experts, inaugurated the clinic. They focus on muscular health to extend the human health spans. After a period of treatment, the doctors noticed that on the left kidney, thick tissues covered it and were the after-products of past surgeries. For this, surgeons operated on it by removing a small portion through an incision on the abdomen to ensure proper removal of a tumor without injuring any of its vital organs such as blood vessels and urinary channels. All were accurately reconstructed before putting in a cancer-free kidney. This avoided maternal kidney donation and lifelong immunosuppression in order to maintain both the child's and his mother's health.

Dr Jain added, "This case is important; Wilms Tumour usually manifests in very young children and advances to a condition that requires immediate surgical intervention. It is the 17th of its kind in the whole world and the first case reported in India. We managed to prevent multiple transplants during his lifetime by preserving the natural functioning of his kidney.".

She further added, "The doctors at Fortis gave us hope and saved our son's life. He is now healthy, playing, and smiling again."

Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) is the first known respiratory virus identified in 2001. For Severe Cases: Hospitalization would be required along with oxygen therapy or mechanical ventilation in severe conditions.

Prevention Tips

As there is no vaccine for HMPV available yet, the following simple precautions could reduce infection:

Patient Baby Arianna, had been suffering from severe anaemia since birth, which significantly affected her overall growth and development. She had undergone multiple blood and platelet transfusions in Kenya, but it did not improve her health. As her symptoms got worse, she urgently needed a half match donor transplant to survive. She was then presented to Fortis Gurugram with anaemia and low levels of platelets in her body.

Upon admission at Fortis Gurugram, the patient underwent a bone marrow testing along with certain genetic tests which revealed Pearson Syndrome. Pearson syndrome is a very rare condition that affects various parts of the body, in particular the bone marrow, pancreas, causes bleeding due to underproduction of blood and platelets, frequent diarrhoea, stomach pain, poor or stunted growth and failure to survive. 

Given the complexity and rarity of the condition, a multi-disciplinary approach was adopted, where Baby Arianna was screened by team of doctors comprising of Paediatric Nephrologists, Paediatric Gastroenterologists, Ophthalmologists and ENT as this condition affects multiple organs of the body and can cause diarrhoea and eye diseases such as abnormal lens and pupil, glaucoma and hearing loss. Post evaluation, bone marrow transplant was chosen as the optimum line of treatment, as the syndrome is a multisystem condition and only a stem cell transplant can aid the treatment of Pearson. 

Considering Baby Arianna did not have any siblings match, nor was there any unrelated donor available, she was taken up for transplant from her mother as a half-matched donor. Post which she underwent a stem cell transplant with a thoroughly planned chemotherapy regimen and extensive supportive care. Post the transplant, she has not required any further transfusions so far and is gradually gaining weight with no further complications.

Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplant or Bone Marrow Transplantation can be a treatment option for Pearson Syndrome in cases of Bone marrow failure. The success rate for which is mere 20%."

The patient, Smt. Resham Devi, who had been living independently at an ashram in Vrindavan for the last 30 years, had a fall last year which resulted in a fracture and dislocation of her left hip. Initially, she was treated with normal treatment considering her frail health, but due to hip flexion deformity and advanced osteoarthritis in both knees, she was facing serious challenges in mobility.
