The action of the film goes in two major worlds: this one and The Further, while Jemma attempts to reveal the truth and save Maya.

Positive Points

The best aspect of Insidious Out of the Further is its atmosphere. The use of shadows, dim lights, sound design, and music presents an eerie experience for viewers. The image quality, such as faces looking scary, rotten teeth, and horrible monsters, creates a certain visual relation to the previous parts of the series as well.

The movie does not lack in jump scares in the first act. However, the horror film turns into one based on psychological tension, instead of being made just for the jump scares. Emotions are another plus in the film. The bond of Jemma with her daughter creates a human touch in the supernatural plot. The fear of Jemma to relive her mother's life creates an emotional plotline.

Amelia Eve is good in the role of Jemma, showing emotions of fear and motherhood. Gemma is portrayed well, therefore, it is easy to believe in being scared for the character. Austin Island seems to be a good choice for the role of Maya while Brendan Perry is also right for playing Nick in the movie. Also, the roles of Maisie Richardson-Sellers and Sam Spruell add a sense of mystery to what is happening.

Negative Points

One of the major drawbacks of Insidious Out of the Further is that it lacks the terror of earlier films. Though it has the accompanying visuals required for supernatural horror films, many of the frights lose their punch in the eyes of the audience, who become familiar with the monsters or images used again and again. The second half relies a lot on creating the atmosphere or psychological drama rather than relying on truly frightful episodes.

The script is rather predictable, and many of the events can be seen coming a mile away, while the final scene does not surprise anybody. Insidious Out of the Further tends to be more boring than scary. It does create a genuine atmosphere, delivers good performances and has an interesting mother-daughter plot, but it fails to give what is expected from the franchise's films in terms of real scares.

Amelia Eve's performance is undoubtedly the main merit of the movie, as she is responsible for its emotional element, while Lin Shaye's return as Elise Rainier is certainly one of the best moments of the film. Moreover, the movie continues to develop the dark beauty of the Insidious films about the visual and auditory aspects.
